Hanjin Terminal at Pier T, Long Beach --ESC Delivers Technical Infrastructure and Operating System to a Mega Terminal

Handling more than one million TEUs per year, the 385-acre Pier T Terminal at the Port of Long Beach, California, certainly qualifies as a "mega terminal." Total Terminals International (TTI), a joint venture between Marine Terminals Corporation and Hanjin Shipping, relocated its operations from the Pier A Terminal to the newly developed Pier T Terminal at the Port of Long Beach. TTI chose Embarcadero Systems Corporation to ready the new facility for operations and to design, develop, and implement a state-of-the-art Terminal Operating System (TOS). The impressive Pier T Terminal opened in August 2002, and now boasts one of the largest outdoor wireless networks in the world.

TTI selected ESC to lead the terminal operator's efforts to lay the infrastructure-including facility security and TOS. The first-rate facility security system includes perimeter security and surveillance. ESC provided an access control solution that involves smart cameras and motor carrier identification equipment at gates to validate truckers and bookings.

TI found a valuable partner in ESC who-as project manager-directed the competitive bid and award process on complex contracts for third party technology vendors providing wireless, automation and computing equipment solutions. The project also involved working closely with TTI to ensure all third parties met their important milestones and satisfied the terminal's technical requirement.

ESC was tasked to ensure a smooth transition to the new facility and to help TTI meet its objective of operating a productive terminal within six months of initiating the project. To meet these objectives, ESC deployed the new technology systems and infrastructure project in tandem with terminal's construction. ESC coordinated project deployment with the Port of Long Beach authorities and its numerous construction teams working on the physical build-out of the terminal, which included lanes, offices, lights, and cranes.

The Challenges
TTI's challenges centered on deploying a greenfield terminal infrastructure and operating system at one of the world's largest terminals. In addition, TTI's multiple software and hardware systems needed to be integrated. ESC supported the terminal operator's objective of opening a productive new facility within the very short timeframe of six months.

The Result
TTI's Pier T solution was comprised of the following systems:

  • Automation (e.g. cameras, barcode readers and printers)
  • Wireless (e.g. antennas, handhelds)
  • Network
  • Telecommunications
  • Cabling
  • Computing equipment and peripherals
  • Terminal Operating Software implementation and integration

CCTV system consisted of:

  • 101 cameras (72 Spectra dome PTZ; 29 fixed)
  • Matrix switcher (148 X 48)
  • Custom software for control
  • Fiber optic transceivers (IFS)
  • 2-way audio communication to 70 stations
  • Data collection devices
  • Web interface

ESC's Technical and Project Leadership
ESC managed all aspects of infrastructure analysis and design, the bid process for each of the system areas, and systems integration for the terminal operating system. ESC developed and outlined a project plan for each design and deployment area. As project lead, ESC established detailed requirements, created Requests For Proposals, and competitively bid the cabling, wireless networks, computer equipment, and terminal operating system. Under ESC's leadership, the project successfully coordinated all of the parties associated with the building and operating of a successful, high-volume marine terminal.
